Synopsis

“A Heart on Fire” tells the story of Safinar Cemileva, an ordinary teacher who made an extraordinary decision: to marry Mustafa Abdülcemil Kırımoğlu—a Crimean Tatar political prisoner held in a Soviet penal camp in Siberia—and to share in all the consequences of his struggle. Mustafa Abdülcemil Kırımoğlu would later become the national leader of the Crimean Tatars. This journey, which began with a deeply personal decision for Safinar, evolved over time into a lifelong commitment to the Crimean Tatar national movement. In 1944, the entire Crimean Tatar population was forcibly exiled from their homeland of Crimea by the Soviet regime and deported to various regions of the Soviet Union, primarily Uzbekistan and Russia. Today, this exile is recognized as an act of genocide committed against the Crimean Tatars, the indigenous people of Crimea. The exile resulted in immense loss of life and condemned an entire people to live far from their homeland. For decades, Crimean Tatars were denied permission to return to Crimea. The struggle to return to their historic homeland became the central objective of the Crimean Tatar national movement. Safinar chose to be part of this struggle. She endured searches, interrogations, and constant pressure and fear. Even while raising her two young children, she stood by her husband and continued to support the Crimean Tatar national movement. Through Safinar’s life, the film reveals the human cost of political repression—both in the Soviet era and today—and the quiet courage behind a people’s struggle for their homeland, a struggle that continues to this day. This is the story of a life in which love transforms into resistance and sacrifice into strength—a life in which a woman never wavers in her devotion to her family, her people, and her homeland.
